Packed Radical Grids As Sims Does The Double
14th September 2009
Heading a packed field of nearly 40 cars, guest driver Alexander Sims won both Radical European Masters rounds at Silverstone this weekend.
The McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year acquitted himself in style, winning the second race by over 18 seconds despite a spin in the closing laps. The round was the first endurance race and rolling start for Sims; indeed, he first drove a Radical on Friday morning. However, the Wansford racer was immediately on the pace, and full of praise for Radical’s spectacular SR8.
“The SR8 does exactly what it says on the tin: a great engine, superb handling and loads of grip,” said Sims. “I can’t think of a single thing to improve the car. It’s been one of the nicest weekends of racing I’ve had, and the factory support has been really professional and welcoming.”
With the Radical European Masters and Radical European Cup joining forces at Silverstone, there was never a dull moment in either race. The cars ran faultlessly, and the weather was perfect for each track session.
Radical co-founder Phil Abbott said: “It was a great weekend of racing, and a real pleasure to have such a talent driving the factory SR8 Supersport. Alexander was a true professional; we set the car up as per the standard works settings. He didn’t want to change a thing, but just drove the car quicker than everyone else! Alex is a real credit to the BRDC McLaren Autosport Award.”
The Radical European Masters series now moves onto to the final round of the 2009 season, held at Dijon, France. Sims is back in action in the F3 Euro Series next weekend, at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.
