Radical Speed Weekend @ The Nürburgring: Race 1 Report

27th June 2010

In a thrilling Shell Racing Solutions Radical Masters race, Bell End Racing’s Jamie Patterson took a dominant victory only moments ago at the Nürburgring, Germany. Patterson fought back after 360 Racing’s pairing of Terrence Woodward and Ross Kaiser beat him to the first corner.

The drivers had plenty of time to prepare themselves during the pre-race grid walk session, with high temperatures ensuring there was plenty of grip. When the lights went out on the rolling start, it was Kaiser that made a break for the start, Patterson staying ahead of Radical UAE’s Bassam Kronfli and Slip-Stream’s James Swift. Radical newcomer Jaap Bartels also made a strong start, powering his SR8 into fifth, ahead of Radical Works Team driver Shaun Balfe.

The order of the top four was maintained to the opening of the pit stop window on lap 12, with Joachim Thyssen battling up into fifth. Back in the Supersports Class, the Italian duo of Andrea Fausti and Marco Cencetti continued their strong Nürburgring form, leading to, and beyond the pit stops, just ahead of Alex Kapadia and Stuart Moseley.

With a short three-lap window, the pits was action packed as drivers made their mandatory stops and driver changes. Patterson pitted first; a shrewd move as he emerged onto a clear track, in the lead by 13.9 seconds. Shaun Balfe had progressed to third overall and handed over to Roger Bromiley, who held station to the chequered flag.

Radical UAE’s SR8 of Kronfli had a long stop, but co-driver Jordan Grogor battled back to fourth, just ahead of Manhal Allos a lonely fifth. Cencetti finished sixth overall and the fastest Supersport class driver, eight seconds ahead of Mark Smithson, having taken over from Moseley. In third was David Thorburn, a great podium finish putting his season back on track after a difficult Spa outing.

Race 2 takes place later today; more news to follow.
